What is an Echocardiogram?

An Echocardiogram is a safe, generally painless ultrasound scan of your heart performed by Specialist Cardiac Physiologist or a Doctor. The person performing the test may be male or female.

The scan uses sound waves to create moving real time images of your heart. These images are displayed on the screen of the echo machine. These images of your heart show the medical team how well your heart is working and look at the structure of the heart. produce real time images of your heart. The test usually takes 30-45 minutes.

You will be asked to undress to the waist and put on a gown that should be left open to the front. Then you will be asked to lie on your left-hand side on an examination bed with your left hand raised over your head.

ECG stickers will be placed on your chest, and ECG leads will be attached to them. A small amount of gel is applied to your chest, and a probe is moved across your skin. The test does not use radiation and has no known side effects.
