Welcome to the Haematology Team
The haematology team cares for patients undergoing investigations and treatment of blood or bone marrow disorders. This leaflet has been written to provide you with information about the clinical haematology team. It will provide you with an overview of our service and how and when to contact us. You will find a list of useful contact details for our team at the end of this leaflet.
The clinical haematology service covers the inpatient ward, the chemotherapy day unit, and outpatient clinics. Our patients will also regularly undergo investigations and receive treatment and care in some of the hospital’s other departments; our team will advise you where you need to go for your appointments.
Your Haematology Team
The haematology Specialist Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) is a team of health professionals who work together to plan the treatment that is best for you. The team consists of experts in different areas of medicine and care, such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, physiotherapists, and more.
Haematology Consultants
When you are referred to the haematology team, you will be allocated to one of our consultants who will be overall responsible for your care.
Haematology Clinical Admin Team
The clinical admin team works closely with the clinical teams and manages administrative enquiries and tasks. They are also sometimes referred to as secretaries.
Please do not contact the clinical admin team if you have concerns or questions about your health or if you do not feel well as this may cause delays in your assessment and care.
Haematology Nurse Specialists (CNS)
You will have the support of a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) whilst you are under the care of the haematology team. The CNS may sometimes be referred to as your key worker.
The CNS has specialist haematology training and experience in treating patients with your type of cancer or haematology disorder. The CNS team offers advice and support throughout your diagnosis, treatment and follow-up and is here to answer any questions and discuss any worries or concerns you may have. The CNS can support you with access to a variety of resources to help support you and your family.
Resident Haematology Doctors
Our haematology resident doctors work as part of the haematology team. During your treatment visits or admission to hospital, the resident doctor is often the one you will see regularly.
Pharmacists
Haematology pharmacists work alongside the team and will help advise you on any medications or chemotherapy prescribed for you.
Outpatient Clinic Appointments
Depending on your diagnosis, you may have an outpatient clinic appointment with your consultant, or one of the other doctors in the team, a pharmacist, or a nurse. The appointment may be face-to-face or a telephone consultation.
Prior to attending regular outpatient clinic appointments, you will be asked to have a blood test. You will need to book the blood test before your appointment. To book a blood test at one of your hospitals, you need to register online: www.swiftqueue.co.uk. You can also book the blood test with your GP.
Your blood results will be discussed with you at the clinic appointment, and the results will be made available for you to view accordingly.
Chemotherapy Day Units
A chemotherapy day unit is a hospital area where patients come in for their cancer treatment and go home the same day. At Frimley Park Hospital, the unit is called Chemo Day Unit (CDU). At Wexham Park Hospital, the unit is called Eden Day Unit (EDU).
Haematology Multidisciplinary Team Meeting (MDT)
The haematology team works closely with other health professionals with specialist interest and knowledge in treatment and care relating to your diagnosis. This includes haematology doctors from other hospitals and histopathologists, and radiologists. The MDT group meets regularly to review your investigation results and discuss your care and treatment plans.
After the MDT meeting, the team will talk to you about your treatment options. We will give you written information about your diagnosis and treatment to support the discussions you will have with members of the team.
You will have the opportunity to request a second opinion about your diagnosis and treatment plan.
Some patients may be eligible to join a clinical trial. Your consultant will discuss the opportunities with you if appropriate, but it is always your decision whether you wish to join a trial or not.
Who should I contact for health advice and support?
In a life-threatening emergency
Always contact 999 in a life-threatening emergency, such as chest pain, new acute shortness of breath or a stroke.
If you feel unwell after receiving cancer treatment
If you feel unwell after receiving treatment for your haematological disorder, you must contact the 24/7 Chemotherapy Hotline at your treating hospital as soon as possible for advice.
MyFrimleyApp
Please do not use the MyFrimleyApp to contact us if you feel unwell or have concerns about your health as this may cause delays to your assessment and treatment.
