What is the Aerobika?

It is a device that uses a combination of air pressure and vibration to help move and clear phlegm.

The Aerobika is made up of 4 parts:aerobika parts.png

  1. A top case
  2. A bottom case
  3. A valve cartridge
  4. A mouth piece

How does the Aerobika work?

As you breathe out through the device the pressure generated  helps to keep your airways open and the vibrations will help to loosen phlegm from the airway wall. These two effects help to move the phlegm upwards.

How do I use the Aerobika?

Treatment can be carried out in sitting or postural drainage positions. Your physiotherapist can advise you on which positions you should choose.

  1. Relax and take a few normal breaths (breathing control)
  2. Close your lips around the mouthpiece to ensure an effective seal. Make sure your hand does not block the exhalation port on the back of the device.
  3. Inhale through the device taking a deeper breath than normal, but do not totally fill your lungs. Hold your breath for 2–3 seconds before exhaling.
  4. Exhale actively, but not forcefully, through the device. You should be able to breathe out steadily for 3–4 times longer than you can breathe in. Keep your cheeks flat and firm.
  5. Repeat 8-10 times
  6. Following this you should do 2-3 huffs to clear any sputum
  7. Have a short period of relaxed breathing before continuing.

Your physiotherapist can advise you on the length of treatment you should aim for, it is usually between 10-30 minutes or until your chest is clear, twice a day.

The pressure can be made harder or easier by adjusting the resistance indicator. Your physiotherapist will advise you on the settings.

How do I clean the Aerobika?

The Aerobika should be cleaned after each use.

  1. Take the Aerobika apart:

1a. Press the Attachment Tabs on either side of the device. Holding the tabs in, gently pull up on the top case until the two parts separate.

1b. Remove the valve cartridge. Do not disassemble any part of the cartridge. To remove the mouthpiece, grip firmly and rotate while pulling away from the device.

2. Cleaning the device

a. Wash the four parts in a solution of lukewarm clean water and liquid dish detergent, allowing the parts to soak for 15 minutes. Agitate gently.
b. Rinse in warm water.
c. To dry, shake the parts to remove any excess water. Allow parts to air dry thoroughly before you put the parts back together.

Alternatively you can put the Aerobika on the top shelf of your dishwasher in a basket.

How do I disinfect the Aerobika?

You should disinfect the Aerobika once a day.

  • The recommended method is to use an electronic steam steriliser
    • The four disassembled parts may be disinfected using an electronic steam steriliser for baby bottles, following the manufacturer’s instructions for use. Allow the parts to cool and air dry thoroughly before reassembly

Alternatively you can use boiling water

  • Place the four disassembled parts in a pot when boiling point has been reached and allow to boil for 5 minutes. Remove from water and allow parts to cool and air dry thoroughly before reassembly.

NOTE: Place a small rack, on the bottom of the pot to prevent plastic parts from coming in contact with the hot bottom.

How often should I replace the Aerobika?

Every 6 months. Please ask your Physiotherapist to supply you with a new one when required.
