Advice after your nerve block for surgery

Introduction
An Echocardiogram is a safe, generally painless ultrasound scan of your heart performed by Specialist Cardiac Physiologist or Cardiologist, who may be male or female.
An echo uses sound waves to create moving pictures of your heart so we can see how well it is working, and the structure of your heart. This test uses additional specialised echo protocol used in cancer patients. It is especially for those receiving chemotherapy or radiation, and is used to detect early damage to the heart.
What to expect
- The echo usually takes 30-45 minutes.
- You will be asked to undress to the waist and put on a gown that should be left open at the front.
- You will be asked to lie on your left hand side on an examination bed with your left hand raised over your head.
- ECG stickers will be placed on your chest and ECG leads will be attached to them so we can monitor your heart rhythm throughout the test.
- A small amount of gel is applied to your chest, and a probe is moved across your skin.
- The test does not use radiation and has no known side effects.
- We can provide chaperone if required or you may bring a friend or relative.
Before your Test
You do not need to fast, and may eat and drink as normal.
Take your medications as prescribed unless told otherwise.
Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to remove from the upper body.
After the test
You can return to your normal activities immediately.
A report will be written following the echo for your referring doctor. The official report will also be available on your MyFrimleyHealth App within 24 hours of the procedure. Your doctor will discuss the results with you at your next appointment.
