Introduction

This clinic is specifically for people who have wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This will have been explained to you either prior to or at your first consultation.

You will have been given an appointment to attend. Patients receiving injections will regular appointments at the eye treatment centre (ETC) or on the mobile macular unit (MMU). The venue may change between appointments, but the following steps in your treatment remain the same on each occasion.

You will have an injection on each of your first three visits. After this, the doctor will examine you in clinic and decide whether you require another injection at that time or not. You will then be given another appointment for 4 or 6 weeks later.

You may be in clinic for up to three hours; it is therefore wise if you have any other health problems, for example diabetes, that you provide yourself with anything necessary for your well-being.

Whilst staff in the eye treatment centre appreciate that the patients need to be escorted to their appointments, due to the restricted seating area and needs of other clinics, escorts are requested where possible to leave the clinic and return at a later time to collect their relative, friend or passenger.

Please also be aware that we see high priority patients, who we try to fast track through the process. These include patients who are on travelling on hospital transport.

Clinic procedure

  • Arrive in clinic or ward as shown on your appointment letter. Book in at reception; take a seat in the relevant waiting area.
  • You will be called for a vision test, dilating drops will be administered and your blood pressure may be taken. You will have a wrist band attached and a red allergy band, if required. You will then be asked to take a seat in a designated area.
  • You will be called in for an optical coherence tomography(OCT) and then asked to wait to see the doctor.
  • You will be called in by the doctor who will make a thorough examination. The doctor will then decide whether you require an injection.
  • If you require an injection, you will be asked to make your next appointment with the macular team and then to wait in the designated area for your injection.
