Bringing in Food from Outside of the Hospital
We provide menus that meet nutritional guidelines and ensure food safety however, we understand that you may wish to bring in your own food to help support your nutritional needs during your stay.
You are welcome to bring food from outside the hospital, but please speak with a member of the nursing team first. They will explain any potential risks. You will also be asked to complete the CF Unit External Food Consent Form, which will be added to your patient record.
Food Safety Guidance for Bringing in Food
- Tinned or packaged foods that do not require refrigeration are the safest options to bring into hospital.
- All food must be transported safely. Chilled items should still feel cold when you arrive on the unit.
- Each room has a fridge where chilled items can be stored. Please ensure all foods are covered.
- Chilled food should be thrown away 2 hours after it has been removed from the fridge.
- Hot food can be kept for up to 2 hours from the time it was cooked, after which it must be discarded.
- Food brought in must have a clear 'best before', 'use by', or expiry date on the packaging.
- Any opened perishable items without a date, or items that are out of date, must be discarded.
- A black bin is provided in each patient room for disposing of food waste. You are responsible for throwing away any food you bring in.
- Homemade food cannot be reheated on the unit.
- Please do not bring in any food containing nuts to protect patients, visitors and staff with nut allergies.
This guidance is in place to reduce the risk of food-borne illness. Please be aware that the safety of any food brought in from outside the hospital remains your responsibility.
Heating Up Food in the CF Unit Kitchen
- We have a microwave that staff can use to heat pre packaged unopened food items (such as ready meals or tinned foods) but only if the packaging includes clear heating instructions
- Ready meals must still be chilled when you arrive on the unit - if they are not chilled, they must be disposed of for safety reasons
- Only staff members are permitted to heat food
Foods we are Unable to Heat
- Food where there is no guidance regarding how to safely heat in a microwave or using a kettle
- Food that has been unsealed for more than 24 hours
- Expired food
- Any hospital meals from the main kitchen
- Any homemade food
- Leftover takeaway food
