Swallowing Therapy: Laryngeal Elevation Exercises
Falsetto voice/laryngeal lift

This exercise specifically helps to strengthen the muscles that lift your larynx (voice box) up when you swallow. This lengthens the period of time your airway is protected as you swallow.

It also helps to open the valve at the entrance to the oesophagus (food pipe) for food and drink to get to your stomach.

  1. Take a breath and sing a note “ee” as high as you possibly can, using your falsetto voice for a high pitched note. As you do this you will feel the muscles in your throat lift up and you can see your Adam’s apple rise.
  2. Gradually make the high note you sing longer and longer.  Aim for 10 seconds.
  3. Repeat 25 times per day, 6 out of 7 days, for at least 5 weeks.
