Frimley Health provides an Ophthalmic service across our three main hospital sites (Frimley Park, Heatherwood and Wexham Park) as well as clinics and treatment in the community at Farnham Hospital, Aldershot Centre for Health and the mobile macular unit. We have different ophthalmic services and clinics at different sites due to how large our service is.

The ophthalmology team is built on a large multidisciplinary team of consultants, speciality and resident doctors, trainee doctors, orthoptists, optometrists and ophthalmic specialists nurses, nurses, photographers and ophthalmic assistants.

The specialist ophthalmic services the trust provides include:

  • Cornea
  • Macular
  • Paediatric
  • Glaucoma
  • Vitreoretinal
  • Triaged emergency care
  • Oculoplastic
  • Orthoptics
  • Cataracts

Ophthalmology regularly sees and treats over 12,000 people each month. The ophthalmology service has state of the art equipment including imaging equipment, laser treatments of multiple conditions and equipment for measurements for cataract surgery.

When you are referred to the ophthalmology department your referral will be triaged, and you will be contacted either by phone, letter or by the MyFrimleyHealth Record (MFHR) app to attend an appointment.

Please make sure you read all the information as it will also tell you the location.

We run clinics from Frimley Park, Heatherwood, Wexham Park, Farnham and Aldershot. We also have a mobile macular unit that moves once a week, travelling to four locations in the local community, on a four-week cycle between Aldershot, Farnborough, Camberley and Basingstoke.

Your appointment letter or information on the MFHR app will have anything specific about your appointment, such as:

  • You may be given eye drops at your appointment to dilate your pupils. As these will blur your vision for up to four hours you are advised to take public transport or to arrange a lift to and from your appointment.
  • If coming for a pre-operative assessment for surgery, please bring a list of your medications and a copy of your glasses prescription, if available, to the appointment.
  • You are welcome to bring a relative, friend or carer with you to your appointment
  • and any questions you may have for the clinician.

When you arrive for your appointment, you will need to check in via the kiosk or reception desk.

You will then be asked to take a seat to wait to be called to have your vision checked, eye pressure checked and given any drops that may be needed for your appointment.

You could then be sent to one of our four imaging rooms to have a scan or photo taken of your eyes. Once this is completed you will be asked to take a seat outside the room where you will be seen by one of our multi-disciplinary team.

Please be aware our waiting times can vary on the day, if you have any concerns about your waiting time please ask a member of staff in the department or on reception and they will be able to help you.

Before you leave your appointment, please make sure that you visit the reception desk to book your next appointment if it will be within the next three months, or to collect the phone numbers you'll need to contact if your appointment is due in more than three months.
