Advice after your nerve block for surgery

What is a Removable Cast ?
It is a cast that can be removed and replaced safely under the advice of your Consultant. The cast is made of two types of synthetic casting materials, one which is flexible (soft cast) and one which is rigid (fibreglass), and it is known as a Focus Rigidity Cast (F.R.C.). It is secured with Velcro straps.
Removing and reapplying your cast
Your Consultant will talk to you about when your cast can be removed. The FRC cast may need to be removed, under the Consultant’s instructions, for Physiotherapy or wound checks.
Your Consultant may allow you to remove the FRC cast for bathing/showering. You may require help to remove and reapply the cast.
Unless you are instructed differently, it is important that you do not put weight through your affected lower limb when the cast is off, as this may affect your recovery.
When removing, undo the straps and spread open the flexible section of the cast. Lift your limb free of the cast. To reapply, reverse the procedure, make sure the limb returns to the correct position and the cast is a comfortable fit. Firmly fasten the straps, but do not over tighten them.
Do’s and Don’ts:
- Do continue to elevate your limb when resting
- Do keep unaffected joints moving to prevent or reduce swelling, stiffness and promote healing.
- Do keep the cast dry
- Do not trim or alter your cast
- Do not stop wearing your cast unless instructed to do so by your Consultant. You may not be fully healed.
- Do contact the Plaster Room if you have any problems or concerns.
These may include:
- The cast digging in or rubbing your skin
- Changes in colour and/or sensation of your fingers/toes
- Any damage to the cast
