Advice after your nerve block for surgery

What is this leaflet about?
You have been referred to attend the home oxygen assessment clinic at King Edward VII Hospital. This is a nurse-led clinic. You will have been referred either by your GP or another specialist. This is to assess your potential need for long term oxygen therapy.
What is Long Term Oxygen Therapy (LTOT)?
This treatment is used to help people get extra oxygen to their organs. It must be used for a minimum of 15 hours in every 24-hour day. It is usually used at night. It can be delivered via nasal cannula or a facemask if preferred. The oxygen is supplied using a concentrator, which is mains operated, that concentrates oxygen from the air in the room. LTOT can improve the function of all major organs and improve quality of life when used appropriately.
What to expect on your visit
A sample of blood will need to be taken from your earlobe. This sample will then be analysed for oxygen levels. It is advised that you remove earrings before you attend. Please eat as normal and drink plenty of fluids beforehand. If you already have oxygen you will need to turn it off for 20minutes before your appointment.
What happens if my oxygen levels are normal?
Your GP will be informed of the result and there is no need for any home oxygen at present. However, you may need to be reassessed at a later date if your condition or requirements change.
What happens if my oxygen levels are below normal?
If the blood tests show low levels of oxygen, we will begin oxygen therapy for 20 minutes and repeat the test. We will increase the amount of oxygen with repeat blood tests until the correct level is found. If oxygen is required, we will arrange home it to be delivered to your home. Further information will be given to you regarding this.
Please note this appointment can take 1-2 hours.
