Introduction

When your child is working to achieve a healthy weight, they will need your support and encouragement. They are most likely to succeed if the whole family is eating healthily and taking regular exercise. Consider the following to help:

  • All the family can follow the same healthy lifestyle
  • Eat meals together whenever possible
  • Try to eat the same meals so that your child does not feel excluded or different
  • Be positive about healthy foods
  • Avoid buying tempting snack foods. Think about healthier options for biscuits or crisps for example.
  • Involve your child as much as possible in the preparation of meals. This can include shopping for food, and menu planning as well. This can help them make sensible choices
  • Provide opportunities to encourage a more active lifestyle
  • Give a lot of encouragement and praise if your child tries or eats a  new healthy food
  • See the section on rewards for more information
