Introduction
The Frimley adult integrated respiratory service (FAIR) is a joined up, integrated, patient centred, specialist service of respiratory nurses, physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants/ technicians providing outstanding respiratory support for patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis and home oxygen.
FAIR comprises of two sub teams who together cover the geographical area of Frimley Integrated Care Board (ICB):
- The adult integrated respiratory team (AIR) provides respiratory services to patients in East Berkshire.
- The respiratory integrated team south (RITS) provides respiratory services to patients in North-East Hampshire, Farnham and Surrey Heath.
FAIR in its entirety delivers respiratory services in the community, secondary care, outpatient, and domiciliary care settings depending on the patients’ needs
Frimley adult integrated respiratory service mission statement:
To provide a safe, effective and patient centred service for adults with long term lung conditions across Frimley ICB. The service is delivered by a highly experienced and compassionate team.
All FAIR staff are highly motivated, receptive to change and dedicated to providing patients with a high standard of care. The team prides itself on how caring, courteous, and knowledgeable its staff are; each staff member strives to achieve the Frimley Health Trust values and core behaviours. As a specialist team our clinical decision making is underpinned by a culture of research and innovation.
Respiratory services provided by FAIR
Admission avoidance (AA), supported discharge (SD) and the respiratory virtual ward (VW)
- Aimed for patients experiencing exacerbations of COPD, ILD or Bronchiectasis
- Patients can be supported and treated at home by Respiratory Specialist Health Care Professionals, preventing admission to hospital (AA, VW)
- Patients can be supported and treated at home by respiratory specialist health care professionals allowing earlier discharge home from hospital (SD, VW), this also allows prevention of readmission
Long term oxygen assessments
Your appointment will consist of one or two blood samples taken from your earlobe either when you breathe room air or oxygen from an oxygen device, if we feel needed. Please bring a list of your medication and any current inhalers with you.
Ambulatory oxygen assessments
The assessment will require a series of walking tests, so please wear well-fitting shoes and bring any walking aids you need. If you already have oxygen, please bring this with you. Please bring a list of your medication and any current inhalers with you.
Respiratory disease management and respiratory physiotherapy appointments
A nurse or physiotherapist will see you. Please bring your current inhalers, a list of your medication and any airway clearance devices you may have (acapella / aerobika) with you.
Your appointment may also involve breathing tests such as spirometry or peak flow measurements. In this case, you will be provided with instructions on how to prepare for your tests.
Respiratory disease management
- Holistic respiratory assessment, medication management and creation of self management plans
- Inhaler guidance and support
- Symptom management and end of life support in conjunction with the palliative care team
- Breathlessness management
- Anxiety related breathlessness management and energy conservations advice with support from local psychological therapies teams.
- Teaching and specialist respiratory support for community practitioners

Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a specialist programme of exercise and education to support people diagnosed with a chronic lung condition such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, bronchiectasis and interstitial disease.
