What is circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure where the foreskin covering the head of the penis is removed. It may be done for medical reasons, such as recurring infections or a tight foreskin. The procedure is usually done under local or general anaesthesia, and recovery can take a few weeks.

During that time, there may be some swelling, discomfort, or sensitivity, but these typically improve with proper care. While the healing process takes longer than in infants, most men recover well and resume normal activities once healed.

What to expect after your procedure?

  • Mild pain, swelling, and bruising around the penis for several days
  • Some bleeding or spotting from the wound site
  • The area may appear red and tender as it heals
  • It may take 10-21 days for the wound to heal fully

How to care for yourself

  • Keep the area clean and dry; gently wash with warm water daily
  • Avoid rubbing or scratching the area
  • The dressing will naturally fall off – you do not need to replace this
  • Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing to avoid irritation
  • Take pain relief such as paracetamol as needed.
  • Avoid sexual activity or masturbation until fully healed (usually 4–6 weeks)
  • You may have been given a tube of chloramphenicol ointment – apply twice a day over the incision site until healed.

Red flags – when to seek medical attention

Please contact your hospital team or attend your local Emergency Department if you experience:

  • Fever (temperature > 38°C) or chills – may indicate infection
  • Severe pain in the sides or lower tummy not relieved by painkillers
  • Persistent or heavy bleeding from the wound or significant swelling of the head of the penis
  • Pus or bad-smelling discharge from the wound
  • Unable to pee
  • Other signs such as confusion, tiredness, or fast heart rate
