Cryotherapy

  • Cryotherapy is the treatment of a small lesion by freezing, which is done with a small probe.
  • The lesion is usually frozen for about two minutes followed by a break of one minute and then the lesion is frozen again for a further two minutes. No local anaesthetic injection is usually necessary. There may, however, be some discomfort as the tissues are frozen.
  • No immediate effects are noticeable but over the first 24 hours there will be some swelling, blistering and discomfort. Treatment of a lesion on the lips or tongue may temporarily affect speech and feeding. Healing takes up to two weeks.
  • Painkillers such as Paracetamol may be necessary for several days. Difflam mouthwash or spray may be helpful. A course of antibiotics may be given.
  • Another appointment is given for approximately one month later when the area will be checked and a further freezing will be carried out if necessary. Some lesions will require two or three treatments before the area is clear.
