Introduction

For some women, breast screening is a two-stage test. You have been asked to return for the second stage of screening and there are many reasons for this. We hope this page answers your immediate questions.

You are very welcome to bring your partner, friend or relative with you.

For Further information, you can contact the Breast Screening Office on 0300 6146296 or a Breast Care Nurse on 0300 6133535

Why do I have to come back?

There are several reasons why a follow-up visit is necessary, many of which are unrelated to cancer. However, we need to conduct additional tests to ensure your screening is thorough and complete.

Do I have to come on that day- can I come on another day.

Whilst we try to fit in with your requirements, these clinics are usually held three times a week when all the specialists will be available to see you.

How Long will my appointment take?

We will probably need to take some further x-rays, carry out a clinical examination and often perform an ultrasound of your breasts. A small number of patients may require a needle biopsy.
We suggest you allow up to three hours for your appointment.

What is an ultrasound examination of the breasts?

This is a test using sound waves to check the breast tissue. The procedure is completely painless and is just like the scan carried out on pregnant mothers.

What does a needle biopsy involve?

This is a procedure where a small sample of the breast tissue is removed and  sent for testing. This is done under a local anaesthetic using either ultrasound or mammography.

Who will I see at this Clinic?

At the Clinic you will see some or all of the members of the Assessment Team. The team consists of Radiographers, the Consultant Radiologist and the Breast Care Nurse.

How soon will I know the results?

Where possible, we will provide you with the results of these additional tests before you leave the clinic. If a biopsy is performed, the results will take approximately 7-10 days. You will be contacted with an appointment for your results.
