You have had IV sedation, therefore you must:

  • have a responsible adult to care for you at home
  • not drink alcohol for 24 hours post procedure
  • not drive a vehicle, operate heavy machinery or sign any legal documentation for 24 hours
  • have plenty of rest at home, as the sedative can make you feel tired and lethargic.

You have had Throat Spray or nasal gel:

  • you must not eat and drink for two hours as the spray/gel numbs your throat and can temporarily affect your swallowing
  • after this time, you can start with sips of water/ cool liquids.

After your procedure:

  • you may experience a sore throat or hoarse voice.
  • you may cough up a small amount of blood or phlegm, this usually lasts for up to 48 hours.
  • you may experience fevers for a day or two. Provided you feel well otherwise, you do not need to see a doctor or take antibiotics (unless you have been told to do so after your procedure).
  • you can return to your normal activities 24 hours after your bronchoscopy.
  • you should restart your medications on the day of your procedure unless otherwise instructed.
  • if you usually take blood thinners or antiplatelet medicine, please ensure your doctor or nurse has given you instructions about when to restart them.

Things to watch out for:

•    fevers lasting more than 48 hours
•    coughing up a large amount of blood (more than a tablespoon at once)
•    feeling unusually short of breath
•    feeling generally unwell
