What is a FibroScan

A FibroScan is a type of scan that assesses the health of your liver.

It does not have any potential complications or risks and is non-invasive, which means that it does not break the skin or enter your body.

What does a FibroScan measure?

A FibroScan measures the ‘stiffness’ of your liver, and degree of scarring if any, in your liver (fibrosis) and any fatty changes (steatosis).

Why do you need to have a FibroScan?

Having a FibroScan will help your doctor/nurse understand the condition of your liver and help them to plan your care.

What do you need to do ?

Please do not eat or drink anything for three hours before your FibroScan. You can take small sips of water and continue taking any prescribed medication. Ideally we ask you not to drink alcohol before your scan.

Please wear a top and trousers or skirt on the day of your FibroScan, as we need to expose the right side of your abdomen. You will not need to remove any jewellery.

What will happen during your FibroScan?

You will be asked to lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head. The nurse/technician will apply a water-based gel to your skin and place a probe on the right side of your abdomen (tummy) with minimal pressure. A minimum of 10 readings will be taken, and you will feel a slight flicking sensation against the skin each time a reading is taken. It should not hurt and will make no noise.

How long will the FibroScan take?

Your FibroScan should take no more than 10 – 20 minutes to perform.

Special Precautions

Although not contraindicated, we avoid doing Fibroscans during pregnancy, so if you are or think you may be pregnant please call us to discuss.

Your results will be discussed with you and any ongoing care (if required) at the end of your appointment.
