A speech and language therapist (SLT) may suggest you follow these exercises to try rehabilitating the muscles you use for swallowing. If you have any questions, please ask to speak to your SLT.

Complete all steps 3 times a day, every day.

Chin tuck against resistance with repetition

  1. Sit fully upright at a 90o angle (in a chair if possible).
  2. Place an inflatable rubber ball of around 12cm diameter between your chin and your chest, using your hand to gently support the ball in place.
  3. Tuck your chin towards your chest, holding the resistance for 1-2 seconds. Lift your chin.
  4. Repeat this 30 times.

Chin tuck against resistance with hold

5. While continuing to support the ball between your chin and chest, tuck your chin towards your chest, holding the resistance for one minute.
