Advice after your nerve block for surgery

What is it?
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Maintenance classes consist of a one hour exercise session every other week and an educational talk and coffee morning every 6 weeks. The course currently runs for six months.
It is a way of helping to maintain and / or continuing to build on the benefits gained from prior attendance at the core Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation has been widely proven to be part of the best treatment plan for people with Chronic Lung Conditions.
Evidence shows that motivation and fitness levels can decrease after people have finished our core Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program and these Maintenance Classes are designed to prevent this from happening.
The sessions are run by qualified Respiratory Physiotherapy Technicians and consist of exercises similar to those in the pulmonary rehabilitation course you have recently completed. The exercises, as before, are designed to work on muscle strength and stamina. The talks aim to maintain / improve health-related quality of life.
Where, when, what?
The sessions currently take place in Windsor and Bracknell at:
• 12th Windsor Scout Hall, Windsor
• The Open Learning Centre, Bracknell
• Woodlands Park Village Centre, Maidenhead
Please check with the Physiotherapy Team regarding availability of venues, as occasionally we need to change venues due to staffing or room availability.
Why should I attend?
Pulmonary rehabilitation has been shown to be very effective in improving quality of life in patients with respiratory conditions; it also helps to improve the distance you are able to walk and helps
you to feel less breathless doing day-to-day activities, such as walking up slopes or stairs, shopping and getting dressed. You may also find you have more energy and not feel as tired.
It is important to maintain the benefits you have achieved following recently completing Pulmonary Rehabilitation and to continue to promote exercise as an important part of your routine. You will also benefit from the encouragement of our Physiotherapy Technicians and exercising in a group environment.
What happens now?
We will discuss the maintenance programme with you at your final Pulmonary Rehabilitation session. If you would like to attend, we will put you on our waiting list and call you with your start date. Alternatively, give the team a call on the number on the front page of this leaflet to arrange a date to start.
Do not forget…
- as before, wear comfortable clothes and shoes you are happy exercising in.
- if you have oxygen prescribed for when you are exerting yourself, please bring it along (making sure there is enough oxygen in the cylinder for the duration of the class).
- don’t forget to bring along any inhalers you may need while you are exercising.
Please inform us at each session if there are any changes to your health, for example if you have started a course of antibiotics.
What happens when you finish the Maintenance Program?
We encourage you to continue with your exercises at home. If you would like to repeat either Pulmonary Rehabilitation or the Maintenance class, you can do so in six months time from the date you finished maintenance class. You will need a referral from either your GP or another health care professional.
