What is a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT)?

The MDT is a group of highly specialist doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, who have specialist training in treating and caring for individuals with skin cancer.

Alongside them is a MDT coordinator, who makes sure all the relevant information is available at meetings.

The team meets once a week to discuss and determine the best treatment and care for people that have been seen within the hospital and also those referred from their GP with a diagnosis of skin cancer.

What does the MDT do?

During the meeting, the results of any skin biopsies, scans or tests are looked at and reviewed by the team. A decision is then made on the best course of treatment for each individual patient. This is then discussed with the individual at their next out patient clinic appointment. We also regularly audit our work and keep up to date with ongoing advances in skin cancer care in the UK.

Who are the members of the MDT?

The MDT has ‘core’ and ‘extended members’, who include

  • Dermatologists – Consultant doctors who diagnose and treat skin diseases and skin cancers
  • Plastic Surgeons – Consultant doctors who diagnose skin cancer and perform complex surgery.
  • Oncologists – Consultant doctors who diagnose and treat cancer using radiotherapy, chemotherapy and biological therapies.
  • Histopathologist – A Consultant doctor who looks at the skin specimens sent to the laboratory for analysis, and decides what the skin specimens are.
  • Nurses – Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) who has extensive knowledge of skin cancer and can advise and support individuals affected by skin cancer. The skin cancer CNS also acts as the key worker, providing a point of contact for patients
