FHFT is launching a new paediatric lung function testing service at the new Slough Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). The service is exclusively for lung function testing in children and young people with suspected or existing asthma – please see full inclusion and exclusion criteria below. 

How to refer

To refer, please use the pathway and referral form located on the Heathier together website and on DXS: 
Frimley Health and Care/Paediatrics/ Frimley ICS Referral Forms/Children and Young People Lung Function Referral Form. 

Key DXS search words include: Lung function, Spirometry, Feno, Fractional Exhaled Nitrous Oxide. These details have also been transferred to Ardens for South Bucks practices.

Inclusion criteria (as detailed on the DXS referral form and in the eRS Directory of Service):  

  • Patients aged 5-15 years.  
  • Has a clinical history suggestive of asthma (the patient must have been assessed in the previous 6 months).  
  • Be infection free for 6 weeks prior to testing.
  • Has a historical diagnosis of asthma but the referring clinician is questioning the diagnosis.

Exclusion criteria (as detailed on the DXS referral form and in the eRS Directory of Service): 

  • Recent respiratory infection (last 6 weeks) or acute illness  
  • Uncontrolled cardiovascular disease  
  • Recent chest, abdominal, or eye surgery 
  • Haemoptysis 
  • Pneumothorax 
  • Aneurysm  

If you require clinical advice or further assessment or management beyond just testing, then please continue to refer as normal to either the paediatric respiratory nursing team or via the general paediatrics service which are both available on eRS - details below:

Please note, there is no change to the current referral process and pathway for GPs in the South. Please continue to refer as per the asthma pathway which is on DXS and Healthier Together: Healthier Together Diagnosis in Asthma Pathway
