Orthotics clinics are delivered from two Trust sites: Wexham Park Hospital and Fleet Community Hospital. Both sites run four-day clinics supported by a dedicated third-party orthotic provider. 

Please ensure patients have already trialled off-the-shelf orthotics and found these insufficient for their clinical needs before referral. These may have been provided by a community physiotherapist or podiatrist, purchased privately, supplied through private healthcare, or obtained by other means. The FHFT Orthotics referral form has been updated to capture details of the orthotic trialled and the outcome. This will help us prioritise patients with the most complex clinical needs and improve their experience within the specialist Orthotics pathway. 

Please note, referrals are valid for two years. Existing patients will require a new referral every two years, or sooner if there has been a significant change since the original referral was made. Please see the provision entitlement table for different scenarios, which can be found on: Orthotics (surgical appliances) :: Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust and on DXS. These details are in line with other national providers, supporting an equitable service based on clinical need. Patients who require items beyond their entitlement may choose to purchase these directly from the manufacturer.

Inclusion and exclusion criteria (as detailed on the DXS referral form and in the eRS Directory of Service (DoS)

 Appropriate (inclusion criteria): 

  • Any patient with a musculoskeletal, diabetic or neuromuscular problem 

Inappropriate (exclusion criteria): 

  • Patients not medically stable.  
  • Patients whose cognitive function prevents engagement with the rehab process.  
  • Patient discharged from Orthotics in the previous 12 months for the same condition unless there is a significant change to their presentation.  
  • Patient not willing to engage in Orthotic therapy  
  • Amputees - If it is a prosthetic issue then refer to your local prosthetic centre.  
  • Silicone Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO’s) redirect to private service  
  • Custom toe spreaders refer to community podiatry. 
  • Patients requiring Orthotics for sports and activities that are not required for every day use  
  • Patients requiring orthotics for workwear (should be provided by their employer)
Procedures performed: Biomechanical Assessment and treatment by trained orthotists providing orthotic prescription, self-management tools.
