Frimley Park’s G1 ward, which includes the chemotherapy day unit, has received a prestigious stamp of approval with all nursing and care staff adopted by Macmillan Cancer Support.

The announcement follows the charity’s adoption of the day unit in 2012.

From this week, all nurses and healthcare assistants on the G1 ward will be “badged” by Macmillan.

They will also get access to a range of education and patient grants, including a professional development grant of £1,000.

They continue to be employed by Frimley Health but will work in close partnership with Macmillan on issues such as counselling and providing emotional support to patients.

G1 matron Claire James said: “Nurses need to be equipped to provide emotional support and to help our patients - it’s not just about providing the right drug.

“There is now more of a focus on living with cancer, about survivorship and how we support people when they have finished their treatment.

“Being part of Macmillan enables us to provide the whole package. Now we are being given more resources and training to help our patients during such a difficult time.”

The G1 staff were due to be officially “badged” after attending a “We are Macmillan” induction day on 12 October.
