Research and Innovation

Research and innovation are at the heart of patient care. Today’s research paves the way to the improved healthcare of tomorrow.

Research and innovation:  For patients and public   For industry   For staff

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (FHFT) supports a broad range of clinical research, conducting studies and trials at our hospital sites.

The Trust provides NHS hospital services for people across four counties. Last year, 248,000 people attended our Emergency Departments, and more than 9,000 births were supported by our midwives. Every day, FHFT staff perform hundreds of medical procedures. Each treatment, assessment or operation has its roots in research. Our investment in research helps ensure we can face future healthcare challenges.

We are committed to providing patients and staff with opportunities to be part of research and innovation. We hope this will lead to earlier detection and treatment of disease, better treatments to prolong life and a better quality of life for all.

Research at Frimley Health

Frimley Health has one research team, with bases at Wexham Park Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital. From these offices the team covers other sites, including Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot and King Edward VII Hospital in Windsor.

We have approximately 100 research studies open or in follow up. Each year we recruit on average 2,000 patients into research studies across most specialties and all hospital sites.

We are an active partner of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Clinical Research Network (KSS CRN), assisting UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN) portfolio trials within the Trust.

The FHFT Research and Innovation team

  • Reviews and approves all research projects carried out in our hospitals.
  • Sets up and manages commercial and non-commercial clinical trials.
  • Co-ordinates governance, monitoring and auditing of research activity in our hospitals.
  • Supports and facilitates staff training and development in research skills.
  • Supports and manages intellectual property on behalf of the Trust.
  • Provides support and advice to staff on all matters relating to research and development.

Our studies address a range of major healthcare issues, such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes, as well as research into less common conditions. We have dedicated clinical trials pharmacists at both sites and work closely with support services, such as pathology and radiology.

New Research and Innovation strategy

We are currently developing a new research and innovation strategy for Frimley Health. We are keen to hear from the public, patients, staff and partners as to what you think our priorities should be over the next three years.
