National Apprenticeship Week 2022

Ana Karina TamangAna Tamang
Mammography Associate Apprenticeship Level 4

Why did you choose this specific apprenticeship?
I was working as an RDA (Radiographic Assistant) for six months when a vacancy for Assistant Practitioner in Mammography came up. My Line Manager asked me if I was interested to do the course and gain a certification and work as a Mammography Associate.

What has been your proudest achievement on your apprenticeship to date?
Being a mature student and someone who did not have any medical background, I was most proud of doing the Functional Skills L2 for Maths and English together with the Mammography course and achieving a Distinction. I am originally from the Philippines so I did not study in the UK. Therefore, I had to ensure that I was able to meet the standards and requirements for the course.

How do you see your apprenticeship helping you to build your career for the future?
By doing the apprenticeship I gained confidence in my role and my abilities and it made me think further into progressing my career in the NHS and in Radiology. I have spoken with my line manager regarding  further development that I can do. I have looked into what requirements I will need to meet if I were to do a Higher Access course and a Radiography course as I thought it might be something I can pursue in a few years in order to build my career and face the future.

What would your advice be to anyone thinking about doing an apprenticeship?
Do it. Grab the opportunity. Don’t hesitate and don’t over-think. No one is too old and it's never too late when it comes to learning. It might be daunting at first but I have learned so much and have thoroughly enjoyed doing the course. My colleagues and my manager were of great help throughout my apprenticeship course in teaching me and helping me with my coursework. I am very proud of what I have accomplished and I am happy to be able to make a difference to our patients and service users.
