During pregnancy, you’ll be offered screening tests for you and your baby. These include blood tests and scans. They can show if you or your baby may be more likely to have certain health problems. Finding this early can help with treatment or planning care.

Screening is your choice. You do not have to have it. Some people want to know if their baby has one of these conditions, and some do not.

Screening is not perfect - some people will be told that they or their baby have a higher chance of having a health condition when in fact they do not have the condition. Also, a few people will be told that they or their baby have a lower chance of having a health condition when in fact they do have the condition.

You can talk to your midwife or doctor, and you can change your mind at any time.

Our screening teams

The screening teams are responsible for supporting women with high chance screening results or unexpected findings on ultrasound scan or blood tests. The team will contact women to inform them of abnormal screening blood test results, provide information on what additional tests can be offered and, in some cases, support referral to specialist units and coordinate the fetal medicine scanning surveillance that may be recommended.

We remain part of the wider support network for women and families throughout pregnancy and are very happy to be contacted directly by women.
