Research interests

Dr McHoney has developed experience in childhood thoracic surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery and cancer surgery in children. His interests in thoracic lung and chest wall and oncology surgery, with delivery of a recognised service within the organization where I work, is an exciting prospect. The combination of congenital neonatal surgery and minimally invasive surgery combines to provide this specialist service to young children.

His interest led him to develop and perform a research project in laparoscopic surgery. This led to the first randomized controlled trial in laparoscopy in children and his PhD entitled 'The metabolic and inflammatory response to laparoscopy in children'.

He has also developed a research interest in near infrared monitoring of unwell children as an aid to clinical management and surgical assessment.

He continues to develop clinical and research interest in the patient groups he looks after.
