Ahead of Dementia Action Week (19-25 May), the Dementia Care Team at Wexham Park has been showcasing their new Omi Mobii machine, thanks to funds raised from our Dementia Appeal by our FHFT Charity team. Helping to support our patients living with dementia, the Omi Mobii is a portable sensory projection system loaded with interactive games that can be used by patients, or with their family members or staff, to promote both physical and mental activity.

Bryan Zhenhao Tan, WPH Dementia CNS, says “I am very pleased having the Omi Mobii, it has made a big difference in the way that we provide activities. There are so many ways in which we can implement Omi in activity sessions with patients; from group activities involving a bit of friendly competition to individual activities for patients who would prefer a more personalised session, Omi can be used to cater to different people’s preferences. Even staff members and family members of patients are intrigued by the activities and projections and join in the fun themselves. It is a great addition to our services, and we are very pleased and thankful in having this machine.”

Amy Frewin, dementia activity coordinator, uses the Omi Mobii regularly and takes it to different wards, organising activities based on patient preference and numbers. Patients can use it while in bed, if they are unable to get out of bed, or Amy can use it in a group setting with multiple patients. Amy says: “The OMI machine has made a huge difference to the activities, and the range of activities that individuals can take part in. Since utilising the OMI machine, it has made the team and myself a lot more visible. I am often approached in the corridor on or a ward with people asking what the Omi Mobii is and whether they can participate. I have also noticed there are a lot more referrals being made to request activities.”

There has been lots of positive feedback from patients, their family members and staff since using it:

“I think it is lovely, I like the butterfly one. It made me happy. There are many to choose”

“The machine is very interesting. I enjoy the football game and whack-a-mole. All the people come together and play the games and listen to music. We really enjoy it.”

“I find this interesting and different. Today’s gadgets are amazing. I do not understand the end goal but it makes me think about what to do.”

The FHFT Dementia Care Team is looking forward to introducing this activity and machine in other sites of Frimley Health including Frimley Park Hospital after a successful and positive introduction in Wexham Park Hospital.
