Professional background

Dr Al-Hourani is a dual fellowship trained Consultant Orthopaedic Knee surgeon, specialising in the breadth of knee preservation/sports surgery as well as knee arthroplasty. He maintains a keen interest in traumatic conditions particularly of the knee including multi-ligament and peri-articular injuries. Having completed the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs), Khalid went on to become one of an exclusive group of UK surgeons to undertake an ACGME Accredited Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowship in Boston, USA. This included specialist knee training at world class centres such as Boston Medical Center, New England Baptist Hospital and Beth Israel. During this time, he was team physician to elite athletes at Varsity/Division 1 Ice Hockey, football and Basketball for Boston University. Prior to this he completed a sports knee and trauma fellowship in a renowned UK tertiary referral Centre (University Hospitals Coventry). 

As part of his current consultant practice he cares for professional/semi-professional athletes and military personnel. 

Speciality interest: Sports knee surgery, female sports knee surgery, knee osteotomy, cartilage restoration, meniscal transplantation, patellar realignment/stabilisation, partial/total knee arthroplasty, trauma.

Research interests

Significant research interest in sports knee surgery and arthroplasty. Published over 40 peer-reviewed papers and a book chapter in the specialties of knee surgery/trauma. Maintains an active interest in research currently focussing on ACL surgery.
