The Neonatal Unit provides specialist care for babies who are born early, unwell, or who need closer monitoring than can be offered on the Transitional Care Unit.

We know having a baby in neonatal care can feel scary and overwhelming. Our teams are here to support you and your family every step of the way. We aim to give the best possible care in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment.

Our care

Parents are an important part of their baby’s care. We make decisions together with families and encourage you to be involved, whether that’s cuddling, comforting or simply being close to your baby. We care for families’ wellbeing as much as we care for babies’ health. Everyone in our units is treated with kindness, respect and dignity.

Our units

Both of our hospitals have Local Neonatal Units. These care for babies born from around 27 weeks of pregnancy onwards, and for babies with a wide range of needs. If a baby is born very early or needs more specialist treatment or surgery, we work with transport teams to move them safely to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Some parents are able to visit the neonatal unit before their baby is born, so they know what to expect. For others, coming here is sudden and can feel very hard. Some families may also join us after starting care in another hospital. If you are not able to visit the neonatal unit before your baby is born you can view virtual tours of each neonatal unit.

Whatever your situation, we are here to help you and your baby feel safe, supported and cared for.

Our Neonatal Unit can care for up to 16 babies born at 27 weeks of pregnancy onwards. This includes 2 intensive care cots, 6 high dependency cots and 8 special care cots.

We are part of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Neonatal Network, which includes 13 neonatal units, the neonatal transport service and Ronald McDonald House in Brighton. If a baby needs more specialist care, we will work with other hospitals in the region to arrange a safe transfer.

Virtual tours of the different neonatal units are available for parents, families and carers.

The Neonatal Unit is on the first floor of the main hospital, next to the Postnatal Ward.
