A cancer survivor has thanked staff at Wexham Park Hospital for her care by raising thousands of pounds towards specialist medical equipment.

Sarah Thomas underwent 12 weeks of chemotherapy on the Eden Day Unit last year after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

She was so impressed with the “caring and supportive” nurses that she organised a range of fundraising activities for the unit, handing over a cheque for £6,070.

The money was used to buy an AccuVein AV400 vein location device.

Sarah, 48, from Maidenhead, began her chemotherapy in January 2017.

She said: “My veins were very difficult to find so every week I would sit with my hands in hot water to make them more prominent.

“All of the staff on the unit were so friendly, caring and supportive and made my visits relaxed and comfortable. I thought this would be a great way to thank them.”

Sarah, who is now clear of cancer, raised £3,035 by collecting donations from friends and holding raffles as well as a country music night and auction.

She also completed a nine-mile sponsored walk from Wexham Park Hospital to the Barclays bank branch in Maidenhead where she works. She was joined on the walk by her mum Sue Sharp, brother Daniel Sharp and a colleague.

Sarah’s fundraising total was then matched by Barclays to create a final figure of £6,070.

“The AccuVein device will help staff to quickly and accurately locate the veins of patients undergoing chemotherapy, hopefully reducing anxieties and ensuring the treatment goes as smoothly as possible.”
