Frimley Health has two Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) units which are based at our Frimley Park and Wexham Park hospital sites.

The AEC units aim to see and treat patients who would have previously been admitted by providing rapid clinical assessment, diagnostic service and treatment targeted at attempting to discharge patients the same day, avoiding the need for any unnecessary overnight stay.

The units can, for example, be accessed for those patients with suspected PE, headaches, painless jaundice and low risk pain and chest infections. By utilising this service, the patient pathway is improved and inpatient beds are used for those who need them.

Ambulatory care aims to provide senior decision making, advanced diagnostics and treatment for patients on the acute pathway with a patient centred approach. Patients may be asked to return to the hospital on subsequent days, depending upon their individual clinical need.

Ambulatory Care at Wexham Park opened in April 2014 and since then has seen almost 9000 patients with a same day discharge rate of over 95%. All medical GP calls are taken by the AEC Matrons in hours and patients triaged to be seen in the most appropriate area. With allocated medical and surgical cover as well as nurses and admin staff this busy service has continued to grow and develop. The unit has a virtual clinic to reduce return visits as well as housing the outpatient antibiotic service (OHPAT) and running a pleural service and same-day heart failure treatment service.
