Working as a nurse on the neonatal unit at Frimley Park
We are a 16 bed unit Local Neonatal Unit (LNU) comprising of 2 intensive care cots, 6 high dependency cots and 8 special care cots. We are a level 2 unit, part of the South East Coast Neonatal Network. We care for babies from 27 weeks gestation (singletons) and 28 week gestation (twins) and babies over 800 grams. Our tertiary unit is St Peters hospital Chertsey. We work closely with maternity services including transitional care.
We are a friendly team led by consultants specialising in neonatal care, paediatric registrars, Quality in Speciality (neonatal) nurses, staff nurses and nursery nurses who work closely with our parents to provide high quality family centred care.
We are currently the only level 2 unit in the country to have achieved a BLISS accreditation as recognition of the work we do to create an environment that supports baby’s development as well as parental engagement.
We work 12 hour shifts, 7.30am to 8pm, 8pm to 7.30am, to include nights and alternate weekends on a rota.
We also have level 3 Unicef UK baby friendly initiative, which supports breastfeeding and parent infant relationships and all of our nurses are trained to support mothers with breastfeeding.
We have a dedicated neonatal outreach team who support babies and families in their own home following discharge from the neonatal unit, led by a senior neonatal sister.
We provide our staff with training, both in-house and external and welcome students from both midwifery and paediatrics. We encourage new staff to complete neonatal competencies, perceptorship and induction training, all supported by our neonatal practice development sister.
