Working as a nurse on the medical acute dependency unit at Frimley Park
The medical acute dependency unit (MADU) is an eight bedded monitored area providing level 1 and level 2 care (high dependency care).
The patient to nurse ratio is higher at 1:2/3 as the patients require closer monitoring, more intensive treatment and are acutely unwell.
Some the conditions we treat in patients include, liver failure, GI bleeds, neurological-MND, OD, acute kidney injury, DKA, type 1 and 2 respiratory failure necessitating non-invasive ventilation (COPD for example) and management of arterial and CVP monitoring in the acutely unwell patient.
From a physician prospective MADU is led by the respiratory consultants and they work with the skilled nursing team to provide the best care and outcome for the patients in their care. We work very closely with the sleep and ventilation team who assess patients for sleep apnea and supply long term NIV as required.
Every shift is led by a band six sister or charge nurse who coordinates admissions, discharges and provides expert support and advice for titrating therapy to the nursing team on shift.
We have a very nurturing and supportive team which is clearly demonstrated in the working environment on MADU and we are often complimented by the patients, relatives and visitors on how we work together.
