Site: Frimley Park

Directorate: Theatres, anaethetics and day surgery
Speciality: Day surgery

Working as a nurse on the day surgery units at Frimley Park

Our department comprises four clinical areas:  Two day surgery units, eye treatment centre and a pre-operative admissions area (POD) based in the pre-operative department.

Day surgery unit 1 is a purpose built unit with nineteen individual cabins and four designated theatres specialising in ophthalmology, gynaecology, plastics, general surgery and orthopaedics. There is also a discharge lounge with ten chairs and a procedure room.  On average 1000+ patients pass through the unit each month.

Day surgery unit 2 has twenty spaces and provides care to patients covering all surgical specialities. On average 500+ patients are treated every month

Eye treatment centre treats patients having eye procedures under local anaesthetic and sees over 400 patients a month. This area is open 7am-7.30pm.

Pre-operative admission (POD) is a self-contained purpose built unit providing a centralised location for all elective surgical in-patients to be admitted prior to going to theatre. This area is open 7am-7.30pm.

Our main focus is to provide first class care for patients having elective day surgery under local, spinal, regional and general anaesthetic as well as sedation. With the exception of neurology our units cover all surgical specialities including endoscopy. Maintaining patient flow is key. We practice nurse-led discharge following strict criteria and guidelines to determine when patients are ready to be discharged. Ours is a busy, fast paced department with excellent potential for learning and development supported by an experienced team of staff and practice development.

All four areas are open Monday – Friday excluding bank holidays. There are two shifts a day: 7am-7.30pm and 10am-10pm however there is the option to work a short shift pattern as well. Full time and part time considered.
