Working as a nurse on acute medical unit at Wexham Park

The Acute Medicine Unit (AMU) is a rapidly developing unit. We have 10 side rooms where we care for patients needing isolation and 12 cardiac monitored beds available to admit patients requiring monitoring or patients with high acuity who do not meet the ITU requirement for admission.

The AMU, take admissions from the emergency department, ambulatory care unit or GPs and from time to time patients who have deteriorated on other ward are brought into the AMU for further monitoring.

Patients stay within the unit for a period of 12 to 72 hours after which they are discharged back to the community or sent to the specialist ward for further care. The AMU has a high patient turnover, with an average of 30 - 40 patients a day.  We receive acutely ill patients with a variety of diagnoses.

A senior consultant leads a team of acute consultant physicians and other junior doctors, who provides medical care for our patients. There is a multidisciplinary team that includes pharmacists, practice development nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dieticians and other specialist consulting team in the AMU.

We are a friendly team of professionals who champion the trust’s values and this can be seen in our everyday practice. We offer experiences in different areas and chances of development and progression. We welcome new members with new ideas to our team and ensure you will feel part of a diverse group of people, who prioritise care and compassion for their patient experience.
